Variable Speed HVAC Increases Energy Efficiency
Amana, Trane, Carrier and other top HVAC brands have specifically designed their systems to include variable speed blowers for greater efficiency and humidity removal. Due to the benefits and popularity of these models, other manufacturers have since followed their lead.
Variable speed motors (technically called an ECM or an Electronically Commutated Motor), coupled with with two-stage compressors and multi-stage furnaces, offer better control and efficiency by helping your system run at the appropriate speed to meet the current load demand.
This equipment was designed to only operate and consume enough energy to meet the current demand. Therefore, in both the summer and winter months, the motor runs at a lower speeds until the demand increases, then it ramps up to meet that higher demand. Other benefits to having variable speed motors are:
The soft-start capabilities and quieter operation. Research indicates there is up to 50 percent less noise than conventional blowers. Better humidity control means the less humidity there is in the room, the cooler the room will be.
On higher SEER (Season Energy Efficiency Ratio) condensing units, variable speed motors are used for the condenser fan motor. The higher the SEER the greater the energy savings. When used in conjunction with multistage furnaces, AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) ratings increase. The higher the AFUE the higher the energy efficiency which equals higher savings.
